Back in November of 2009, I upgraded mine and my sons cell phone from an HTC G1 to a Motorola Cliq. Motorola was trying to get back into the limelight by releasing an Android powered smart phone and it looked like a great device at the time. Even though the Droid was coming out around the same time, the Cliq had a nice keyboard and it felt like a very solid phone. It was near the end of February 2010 when Motorola announced that there would be in update to the Cliq and there was but it was only updated to Android 1.5. It added a couple of features but nothing earth shattering and it certainly was not Android 2.1 like everyone expected.
After that, Motorola announced that the update to Android 2.1 would be coming in second quarter of 2010. It wasn’t great news but what was another three months. End of second quarter came and on June 30th, Motorola announced, on the Motorola Owners Forum, that “we’ve made a decision to take more time on the release to optimize the experience in some key areas.” It’s now coming up on August 15th and still no word from Motorola about any time-frame for the update.
After seeing all of the features available in Android 2.2, I couldn’t wait any longer and I rooted my HTC G1. I was able to install 2.2 with no issues in about an hour. Now, it is a little buggy at times and I have heard of people turning their G1′s into paper weights when rooting them but for the most part, it is working very well with almost all of the bells and whistles that Android 2.2 has to offer. Needless to say, my Cliq is now sitting on my desk until they release the update. If the Cliq does not receive Android 2.2 it might never be used again but I can say with all certainty, I will never purchase another Motorola phone.
